SPECIFICATIONS: UNDY


GENERAL INFORMATION:

Pigment-Emulsion (water/oil) inks which may be reduced and washed-up with either mineral spirits or water. These inks are recommended for application to cotton, cotton/synthetic blends and most synthetic fabrics (not water-proofed nylon) where the ultimate in soft hand and excellent washability are required. All colors are formulated from Lead-Free raw materials. The air-cure or low temperature curing feature results in considerable energy savings.

OPACITY:

UNIDYE Inks are formulated for printing on light colored garments. UNIDYE White UNDY-1000 has good opacity and, when added to UNIDYE Colors will greatly increase their covering power on darker fabrics and overlays but may alter the shade.

DRYING AND CURING:

Prints may set sufficiently for light stacking immediately after printing. Curing for good washability can be accomplished by any one of the following methods:

  1. By adding Catalyst UNDY-9120 (2% or 2 parts to 100 parts color or as indicated on the catalyst container). Catalyzed Inks will air-cure within 24 hours for optimum wash resistance. Pot life of ink/catalyst mixture is 48 hours after mixing.
  2. Without the addition of catalyst and without heat, washability will improve with aging. Fair washability will be achieved after 7 days. Washability will be good after 14 days and excellent after 28 days.
  3. Excellent washability can also be obtained immediately without the addition of catalyst when cured at 250-325F (121-162C) for 3-5 minutes.
  4. By adding Catalyst UNDY-9120 and conveyor drying at very low temperatures ranging from 100-123F (38-52C), excellent washability can be achieved in 24 hours.

REDUCER/RETARDERS:

Mineral Spirits or UNION INK SOLV-0225. Water may be used but care should be taken to prevent drying in the screen. Retarder SOLV-1679 or 2-5% ATEX-9600 Aqueous Stay Open can be used if one wishes to stay in the all water-phased system. Addition of these additives will diminish opacity.

ADDITIVES:

Extender Base UNDY-9090 is a smooth homogeneous medium for extending colors or to make colors by mixing with special UNIDYE Concentrate Colors. When mixing concentrate Colors and Extender Base, or preparing Extender Base from concentrate, a high speed homogenizer should be used. (Formulations supplied on request.)

WASHABILITY:

Excellent (See "Drying and Curing"). Pre-Test for dry cleanability.

SCREEN FABRICS:

110-140T (43-45 metric) monofilament polyester meshes are recommended.

STENCILS:

If one decides to reduce and wash-up with water, water-resistant direct emulsions, such as UNION INK's INMARCOL-W, or Knife-cut Lacquer Films are suitable. If one uses Mineral Spirits for reduction or wash-up, the above type stencils or standard direct emulsions such as INMARCOL-R may be used for short runs. In either case, for long runs, re-inforced or permanent screens are recommended.

WASH-UP:

Use either water, detergent (ATEX-9400), or mineral spirits (SOLV-0225). Wash up as soon as possible after printing.
