CHALKBOARD PLASTISOL

Heat Transfer and Direct Print Special Effect Ink

APPLICATION

FEATURES

SPECIFICATIONS: PLFX-CK### Series

GENERAL INFORMATION:

CHALKBOARD Plastisol is used to provide a smooth, dry surface on a garment which can be written upon with normal limestone chalk. The ink can be printed either as a direct print or as a cold peel transfer. CHALKBOARD Plastisol is available in black, green, red and white.

SCREEN FABRIC:

Use a coarse mesh, preferably 86T (34 metric) monofilament.

STENCILS:

A thick stencil coating to give a thick ink deposit is recommended. Use direct emulsion stencils such as UNION INK's INMARCOL-R or INMARCOL-W, or the heavier capillary direct films to give a 4 mil or thicker stencil.

REDUCTION:

CHALKBOARD Plastisol is supplied ready-for-use. It is strongly recommended that the ink not be reduced. If absolutely necessary, reduce only with  Reducer/ Detackifier.

DIRECT PRINTING:

Curing of direct prints: Accomplished with the use of a conveyor dryer, flash curing unit, or simple infrared heater. When direct printing, CHALKBOARD Plastisol will fully cure and withstand repeated washings when the entire ink deposit reaches 300°F (149°C). (Note: The oven setting may have to exceed 325°F in order for the ink deposit to achieve this temperature.)

HEAT TRANSFER PRINTING:

Transfer Release Paper: Print CHALKBOARD Plastisol onto heat transfer release papers, such as TRANS-LITH or TRANS-FRENCH T-75, for cold peel transfers only. Hot peel transfers are not recommended because this method will not provide the smoothest possible surface for chalk drawing.

Semi-Curing of Heat Transfers: Prints on heat transfer paper should only be semi-cured or "gelled". Over-cure may cause problems later on during transfer (more energy is needed to remelt a cured film than a semi-cured film). Semi-curing or drying the film only to the extent that the sheets can be handled, stacked, cut and shipped is the desired condition. The ink will semi-cure when the ink deposit reaches 250°F (121°C).

WASH-UP:

Mineral Spirits or UNION INK's biodegradable WASH-9900 Skreen Kleen.

END USER INSTRUCTIONS:

Transfer Application: Instruct the end user to pre-wash and iron the garment that is to receive the CHALKBOARD transfer. For best results, use 100% cotton garments.

The transfer can be applied to the garment with either a transfer press or hand iron. For a transfer press, the recommended setting is 375°F. for 10 seconds or longer, under heavy pressure (40-50 psi). The paper can be pulled hot or cold depending on the desired finish. To apply the transfer with a hand iron, use a cotton setting and iron on a hard board or piece of plywood (do not use an ironing board cover). Place a blank sheet of paper over the back of the transfer. Apply firm pressure in a back-and-forth motion over the entire design area for 30 seconds or more, let cool, and repeat ironing for another 30 seconds or more. Wait for the surface to cool completely before removing the transfer paper.

WASHABILITY:

Excellent; comparable to standard plastisol heat transfers. As with all heat transfers, finished garments should be washed inside-out, in cold or warm water, in a gentle wash cycle. Avoid excessive heat in either washing or drying.

NOTE:

Litho/Screen Printing Combination: CHALKBOARD White can be used as the backing when using one or more of UNION INK's LTHO Series inks in combination litho/screen printing. This will provide adhesion of the artwork to the garment and also display a surface for chalk drawing wherever the CHALKBOARD White is not covered by the litho artwork. CAUTION user against chalking over the litho ink which is more easily abraded.

CAUTION:

Always pre-test for adhesion, crocking, opacity, washability and specific requirements. They are offered solely for your consideration, investigation, and verification. Pretest inks on surfaces to be printed.
